Organic peroxide

Organic peroxides are organic compounds containing the peroxide functional group (ROOR′). If the R′ is hydrogen, the compounds are called organic hydroperoxides. Peresters have general structure RC(O)OOR.


An organic peroxide is any organic (carbon-containing) compound having two oxygen atoms joined together (-O-O-). This chemical group is called a peroxy group. It is the double oxygen of the peroxy group that makes organic peroxides both useful and hazardous.

Organic compounds can ignite on contact with concentrated peroxides. Strongly reduced material such as sulfides, nitrides, and hydrides may react explosively with peroxides. Many produce explosions or generate gases (toxic and nontoxic). Most often, organic peroxides are used to cure liquid resins overlaid on fiberglass or carbon fibers, forming a strong yet very lightweight matrix. Crosslinking of rubber and elastomers to increase their mechanical strength and resistance to chemicals or weather. Chemically, organic peroxides are compounds characterized by the pres-ence of an oxygen-oxygen linkage in the molecular structure.


Therefore, organic peroxide transportation, storage and handling conditions must always respect the Self Accelerating Decomposition temperature.

Peroxides are good oxidizing agents. However, they can be handled and stored safely if proper precautions and procedures are followed. Peroxyacetic acid provides its antimicrobial activity by disrupting the respiratory, oxidation, and other cellular processes.


A very large number of compounds fit this definition and therefore organic peroxides may have a wide range of properties. Decomposition can also be caused by hot material being added to an organic peroxide , or by the peroxide being put into a hot recipient. We cover classes such as ketone peroxides, diacyl peroxides, peroxyesters, peroxyketals, hydroperoxides, peroxydicarbonates and peroxymonocarbonates.


Although a number of organic peroxides can safely be stored at room temperature, most require some form of temperature control. For long storage periods, the organic peroxide is usually kept at a lower temperature than the maximum safe storage temperature as determined by the SADT. This single bond is easily broken, so they can decompose quickly and react easily with many substances. Because of this, organic peroxides can be used to start or assist many chemical processes.


A liquid or solid organic substance which contains the bivalent -0-0- structure and may be considered a derivative of hydrogen peroxide , where one or both of the hydrogen atoms have been replaced by organic radicals. The term also includes organic peroxide formulation (mixtures). The diacyl peroxide segment is estimated to be the largest type segment of the global organic peroxide market. Diacyl peroxide is used as a free radical initiator in the polymerization of PVCs. It also acts as an initiator for vinyl monomer polymerization.


Due to current environmental regulations, this method has become the preferred method of liquid organic peroxide disposal. Dilution of the organic peroxide to an active oxygen conten t less than in a satisfactory solvent is recommended.
