Mouthwash to numb mouth

What can cause numbness in my mouth? Should one rinse with mouthwash? Which mouthwash will kill the most oral bacteria? Does using mouthwash damage your teeth or gums?


Both adults and children can use magic mouthwash.

It’s a common treatment for a sore mouth. You may get mouth sores or blisters because of cancer treatments or an infection. This condition is called oral ( mouth ) mucositis.


A numb mouth can be frustrating if you start to get hungry or try to carry on a conversation before complete feeling returns to your mouth and face. Numbness of the mouth and around the mouth can be precipitated by low calcium in the blood (hypocalcemia). Supplements such as calcium and vitamin D can help treat the hypocalcemia and your symptoms. Depending on the specific cause of your symptoms, you may take the supplements for a short period of time or long-term.


Magic mouthwash is supposed to make your mouth feel numb to lessen the pain of the oral lesion or sore in your mouth.

I only use it for seconds like the instructions say. It is usually mixed by a pharmacy with a prescription from a doctor. Common ingredients used in magic mouthwash formulations include: Diphenhydramine – an antihistamine that can reduce inflammation and pain. Nystatin – antifungal for treating candidiasis. Lidocaine – an anesthetic frequently used in topical formulations that can reduce pain by numbing.


Oral Pain Relief Mouth Wash at Walgreens. Swish one-half of a capful ( teaspoons = 10mL ) around the mouth and over the affected area for at least minute, then spit out. Keep away from heat or direct sunlight.


Cepacol Numbing Mouthwash, Ounces each (Value Pack of 2) Colgate Peroxyl Mouth Sore Rinse, Mild Mint - 500mL, 16. While it is most commonly prescribed for mouth sores due to chemotherapy, it may also be used to treat mouth sores that arise as a result of radiation to the head and neck region,. Though patients have reported that magic mouthwash can effectively numb the mouth , it is also reported to cause taste changes, and formulations that contain alcohol, as most compounding mixes do, can cause further irritation and pain.


I have been using biotene toothpaste and mouthwash which helps to keep a pH balance in the mouth. There is also a perscription you can get for magic mouthwash. Among other things it contains lidocaine which helps numb your mouth. I did ask my pharmacist about it and he is familar with it but it does need a script.


However, patients who have tried the compounded mouthwash may beg to differ.

When oral ulcers cause so much pain and inflammation that eating and drinking are excruciating, using magic mouthwash may soothe the pain. Further, the addition of antibiotics can help prevent severe mouth sores from getting infected. Eating or drinking something too hot or too spicy can also lead to a numb mouth. Chlorhexidine gluconate is a germicidal mouthwash that reduces bacteria in the mouth.


If you use mouthwash without removing that layer of plaque on your teeth and gums first, the chemicals cannot make contact with the surfaces you’re trying to clean. This might make it sound like the best time to use mouthwash is right after brushing – but there’s a caveat!
