Chlorhexidine for wounds

Hibiclens (chlorhexidine) is a good antiseptic for cleaning minor wounds on the skin, but should not be used on deep wounds. It is highly bactericidal. Several animal studies have tested the efficacy and safety of chlorhexidine on wounds.


It has been found to have mild inhibitory effects on wound healing in guinea pigs. In animals, chlorhexidine is used for topical disinfection of wounds , and to manage skin infections.

Chlorhexidine should only be used on the skin. Do not swallow it or get it in the eyes, ears, mouth, or nose. Do not use it on the genital area (sex organs) or anal area.


If it does get on these areas, rinse it off right away. We decided to compare the effect of chlorhexidine , normal saline and tap water on healing wounds. Three groups of wistar rats had by 2cm full thickness wounds made on their right dorsolateral flanks.

Clean gauze, mild solutions, and sterile tweezers are best for cleaning open wounds.

Use very light pressure on the wound to express any liquid or pus. To make a salt water solution boil the kettle, measure out a cup of water,and add half a teaspoon of salt. Then stir to dissolve and leave to cool.
