Root canal from trauma

Why root canals are performed and how they work? Does a root canal hurt during or after? Do root canals cause serious illness? Will a root canal Save my infected tooth?

Root canal treatment is usually needed for permanent teeth that have been dislodged and should be started several days following the injury.

Your endodontist or general dentist may reposition and stabilize your tooth. Eventually, a permanent root canal filling will be placed. A root canal is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Without treatment , the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses may form.

For permanent teeth, root canal treatment may need to be started and regular visits to the dentist following trauma may be required to monitor the state of health of the tooth and the pulp cavity. Children with developing teeth (pre-pubertal, usually) usually do better than adults, since there is the potential for the cells in the pulp to grow further and heal what injury has occurred. During an injury , a tooth may be pushed sideways, out of or into its socket.

Medication such as calcium hydroxide may be put inside the tooth as part of the root canal treatment. Endodontic therapy” or “root canal treatment” are the dental terms to describe this procedure. If the fracture is on the root and it hasn’t spread up the tooth or completely damaged the root , then root canal may be a valid route.

It is widely reported that a root canal is one of the more painful procedures but if there is a chance to save the tooth you may as well give it a shot. The root of the tooth is covered in live cells that are necessary to restore good function to the replanted tooth. If you can, find the tooth and gently (with a clean finger or hanky) wipe any obvious dirt off it. If pulp necrosis develops, root canal treatment of the coronal tooth segment to the fracture line is indicated to preserve the tooth.

Gum Tissue Trauma Your dentist will need to isolate your tooth for the root canal treatment. This is done by using a rubber dam and placing it around the tooth. A metal clamp is used to keep this rubber sheet in place and the prongs of this tool may traumatize (bruise, cut, pinch) the gum surrounding the tooth.

Root Fracture: A traumatic injury may result in a horizontal fracture of the root. The procedure involves removing the damaged area of the tooth (the pulp), cleaning and disinfecting it and then filling and sealing it. The long term health of the tooth is determined by the location of the fracture. Pearly Whites Despite an Injury Anyone can fall, get into an accident, or in some other way end up with a discolored tooth. The root is being replaced by bone, and the lamina dura becomes lost around the root as it becomes incorpor-ated in the bone.

A localized injury over a small surface area favors cemental healing. Re: Dental trauma and the necessity of root canals I would avoid any unnecessary root canal , since they actually kill the tooth, and leave the tooth bone in place.

Once the tooth is destroyed that way, it can never be restored. A canal in a tooth is the space in the middle of a tooth root. This space normally contains pulp tissue which is mainly nerve and vascular tissue. Fractures that are in the horizontal plane can usually be detected in the regular periapical o angle film with the central beam through the tooth.

This is usually the case with fractures in the cervical third of the root. This damage is caused by decay or trauma to the nerve. But how can you and (more importantly) your dentist tell if you need this done ?
