Localized Gingivitis – Inflammation of a single tooth or a specific group of teeth. Marginal Gingivitis – Involves the free (or marginal ) gingiva. Can be localized or generalized.
In marginal gingivitis, the inflammation is relatively mild and is sometimes localize existing around one, two, or several teeth. The most frequent cause of marginal gingivitis is poor oral hygiene.
SYMPTOMS— The patient most likely will present with sore, swollen, bleeding gums. A fiery red discoloration is superimposed on underlying chronic changes. Localized gingivitis is confined to the gingiva of a single tooth or group of teeth, whereas generalized gingivitis involves the entire mouth. Marginal gingivitis involves the gingival margin , and it may include a portion of the contiguous attached gingiva. GENERALIZED MARGINAL GINGIVITIS : Involves gingival margins in relation to all teeth.
The term includes small, bright re easily bleeding, localized or generalized gingival overgrowth, with a papillary or velvety texture. Localized marginal gingivitis (confined to one or more areas of the marginal gingiva ). Localized diffuse gingivitis (extends from the margin to the mucobuccal fold but is limited in area).
Localized papillary gingivitis (confined to one or more interdental spaces in a limited area). B lymphocytes, now also see change in color, contour, size, texture. Gingivitis is a non-destructive disease that causes inflammation of the gums. The most common form of gingivitis , and the most common form of periodontal disease overall, is in response to bacterial biofilms (also called plaque) that is attached to tooth surfaces, termed plaque-induced gingivitis. Most forms of gingivitis are plaque-induced.

Most frequently it is the result of poor oral hygiene and affects both the gingival margins and papilla. Chief irritants are food debris and plaque around the necks of the teeth, interproximal spaces, or overhanging margins of dental restorations.
Occasionally, a localized inflamed condition may exist from a popcorn husk or toothbrush bristle. Moderate Marginal Periodontitis! Generalized form demonstrates horizontal bone loss! Localized defects include vertical bone loss and loss of buccal and lingual cortices! Loss of buccal or lingual cortex is difficult to view radiographically.
Marginal periodontitis is a disease of the marginal periodontium characterized by inflammation and resorption of the alveolar crest. Clinically it must be differentiated from gingivitis and senile atrophy.
Recession refers to the location of the gingiva, not its condition. Receded gingiva can be inflamed but may be normal except for its position. Recession may be localized to one tooth or a group of teeth,.
LOCALIZED GINGIVITIS : Confined to gingiva of single tooth. No mobility or furcations present.
