Magic mouthwash ingredients

How do you mix magic mouthwash? What is the prescription for magic mouthwash? One kind consists of diphenhydramine ( Benadryl ) allergy syrup , lidocaine , and aluminum hydroxide liquid syrup ( Maalox ). Mucositis is often accompanied by a fungal candida infection called thrush.


An antifungal medication such as nystatin reduces fungal growth, and is often added to magic mouthwash.

The powder or liquid suspension is used as the antifungal agent in magic mouthwash. Common ingredients used in magic mouthwash formulations include: Diphenhydramine – an antihistamine that can reduce inflammation and pain. Lidocaine – an anesthetic frequently used in topical formulations that can reduce pain by numbing.


Nystatin – antifungal for treating candidiasis. Viscous lidocaine usually comes in a 100mL bottle. It is easier to use the entire bottle in a batch, since the medication is thick and difficult to measure.


Mix 100mL of each of the other two ingredients with the lidocaine. Its commercial name is Benadryl.

An anesthetic: for numbing the painful area in the mouth or throat. The most used is called Lidocaine and it needs the doctor prescription. Ulcers are one common problem treated with magic mouth wash. According to Mayo Clinic, magic mouthwash contains at least three ingredients from several categories: an antihistamine, an antibiotic, an antaci an antifungal and a corticosteroid.


Rx: ml viscous lidocaine. Swish and spit mL QID. Magic Mouthwash Recipe 1. One study directly examined the effects of magic mouthwash to other oral washes. An antifungal to reduce fungal growth. An antihistamine or local anesthetic to reduce pain and discomfort.


A corticosteroid to treat inflammation. Sig: Swish, gargle, and spit 5ml tid or qid. The mouthwash is usually made in a compounding pharmacy with ingredients specified by a doctor.


While there are numerous variations that make up the formula, most contain at least three ingredients. Common elements include Maalox, Benadryl , antibiotics and viscous lidocaine. Assuming that Noah isn’t allergic to either of the ingredients , you can use the recipe above for the “ magic mouthwash.


Just be sure to try and dab it on the sores in the mouth so that Noah doesn’t swallow too much of the medicine.

Mary’s mouthwash is a particular formulation for use in treating stomatitis or mouth ulcers. Any of the above combinations can also be referred to as MAGIC MOUTHWASH or MIRACLE MOUTHWASH and they require a prescription from a physician. DIRECTIONS FOR USE: Use approximately a tablespoonful.


Keep in mouth and swish for at least minute, then spit. Compounded formulations for symptomatic management of mucositis There are numerous magic mouthwash preparations. Most contain at least ingredients.


Most formulations are used every 4-hours prn with instructions to hold in the mouth for 1-minutes then spit out or swallow. Despite a lack of evidence that prescription mouthwashes are more effective in decreasing the pain of oral lesions , many patients and prescribers continue to use them.
